Membership Drive 2012 Phase 2

Phase Two of our 2012 Membership Drive starts April 1, 2012.  The first Phase was very successful, bringing in an additional 32 members.  Our goal for the remainder of the year is to add another 100 members to our roster.  RRRMC members are encouraged to talk to their family, friends and co-workers about our great facility, promote membership and encourage these folks to sign up with you as their Sponsor.  The process will be as follows:

A green recommendation card will be used for qualified entries into the drawing and these cards are available at the Range.  RRRMC members will write their name on the card that they give to a prospective non-member who is interested in joining.  The non-member will then write their name on card and present it to the Desk Volunteer when they come in to complete a membership application. This card will then be placed in a drawing for the incentives listed below. All new referred members will be presented with a “Challenge Coin” at the time of joining.

Please note that the RRRMC members must present the green card to their non-member relative or friend to be eligible for either drawing.  Working the Desk and taking credit for walk-in new members does not qualify for the drawing as this would be an unfair advantage to working the Desk.

Incentive #1 – NDSU Football Tickets
All cards will be eligible for a drawing to be held on September 13, 2012 at the RRRMC Annual Banquet/Meeting.  The winner will receive 2 tickets to a NSDU regular season at home football game of their choice.  They will be guests in NDSU President Bresciani’s section at the Dome.

Incentive #2 - Handgun
All cards will be eligible for a Handgun donated by Scheels. The winner will be the RRRMC Member who brings in the most new members by December 21, 2012.  To qualify, the member must sign up a Minimum of 6 new members between April 1 and December 21, 2012. The winner can pick out a new handgun of their choice (Max of $600 retail value) between Christmas and New Years.

Additional Incentives

Will draw 5 Names of all entrants (No Minimum to Qualify) on Dec 21st.

  • 1st Name. Gift Certificate for Premium Membership plus $100 Gift Card.
  • 2nd Name. Gift Certificate for Premium Membership plus $50 Gift Card.
  • 3rd Name. Gift Certificate for Premium Membership.
  • 4th Name. Gift Certificate for Standard Membership plus $50 Gift Card.
  • 5th Name. Gift Certificate for Standard Membership.

No Duplicate Winners - If Winners’ name drawn 2nd time, will draw again. The First Phase of the 2012 Membership Drive ended on March 17, 2012.

PHASE 1 COMPLETED. Our goal was 50 new members. Current RRRMC members recommended RRRMC to non-members and we added 32 new members. We did not reach our goal, but we had fantastic results. Thank you to all who brought in a new member.  All members who recommended a new member were placed in a drawing held at the same time as our Gun Raffle Drawing. The winners are:

  • First. Jeff Anderson. Premium Membership Gift Certificate and a $100 Gift Card.
  • Second. Steve Carbno. Premium Membership Gift Certificate and a $50 Gift Card.
  • Third. Edward Mason. Premium Membership Gift Certificate.
  • Fourth. Darrell Kersting. Standard Membership Gift Certificate and a $50 Gift Card.
  • Fifth. Dave Weber. Standard Membership Gift Certificate.

Volunteer Profile

The position of Range Safety Officer (RSO) is one of the most important at the marksmanship center. Range officers are responsible for ensuring that all gun safety rules are followed at all times. They introduce new shooters to these rules and monitor the shooting lanes. And they’re volunteers.

Gary Haynie, of Fargo, joined the range shortly after it opened in 2009. When he found out that the center needed RSOs, he volunteered. As required he took the NRA RSO training course and has been an active safety officer since September 2011.

“I believe in this range and I’m delighted it’s here,” he says.

Gary enjoys working with other range personnel and fellow shooters. “They’re genuine people, with integrity, and good to work with.”

The marksmanship center is currently recruiting members to serve as range officers. To volunteer or for more information, e-mail rrrmc@ideaone.net.

"If you want a shooting club, put in your hours,” Gary says. “It won’t work without volunteers.”

Range is Important for Training

Young top-level shooters and coaches are using the facilities at the Red River Regional Marksmanship Center to sharpen their shooting skills and prepare for national and international competitions.

Three members of the USA Pistol National Junior team participated in a shooting camp held in January at the range. The camp was conducted by Steve Faught and Eric Pueppke, Amenia, N.D., both assistant pistol coaches for USA Shooting.

The pistol team members were Marshall Matters, Hermosa, S.D., Alana Townsend, Kalispell, Mont., and Darian Shenk, Annville, Pa. Marshall finished as the top junior men’s air pistol shooter for the Olympic trials held recently in Ohio. Darian finished second overall in women’s air pistol. Alana and Darian will be attending NDSU this fall and will continue their training at the RRRMC.

The Six Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting

In this edition, we will cover the basics of the third fundamental of pistol shooting: Breath Control.

Breath control is another critical element in marksmanship.  If the shooter breathes while trying to aim, the rise and fall of his chest causes the rifle to move vertically and disrupts his sight alignment.  To eliminate this motion, it is necessary for the shooter to briefly stop breathing while firing a shot.

  • Natural Respiratory Pause

When shooting, the shooter takes normal breaths then he exhales until he reaches a point called natural respiratory pause.  Natural respiratory pause is the period when the shooter is completely relaxed in his respiratory cycle.

The natural respiratory pause lasts just seconds during normal breathing, but this pause can be extended up to 15 seconds for some shooters to fire a shot.

This pause should last as long as the shooter feels comfortable with it.  It really depends on the physical condition and the lung capacity of the shooter.  Holding the breath longer than is comfortable will cause a lack of oxygen that can deteriorate vision and affect the shooter's ability to focus on the sights.  Involuntary movements of the diaphragm will occur that will interfere with the shooter's ability to concentrate.
