Red River Hapkido

We are the only hapkido dojang in North Dakota and the Fargo/Moorhead area. Red River Hapkido exists to support the practice and teaching of hapkido. Serving the Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota area, we are a traditional hapkido dojang teaching the complete art and techniques of Choi Young Sul, the founder of hapkido. We also offer hapkido workshops in Canada, other states in the USA.

How to Begin

You are welcome to attend a free class as our guest. Simply show up about 10 minutes before the 7:00pm class any Monday, Wednesday or Friday for a brief orientation and wear some loose comfortable clothing. No shorts please.

About Hapkido

The study of power and motion, hapkido (In Hangul, 합기도; In Hanja, 合氣道 ) is the Korean martial art of self defense and combat. The name literally means "joining-energy-way" and conceptually is translated as "The way of coordinated power". Hapkido uses timing, body dynamics, and centered movements relying on physics, geometry and physiology.

Hapkido History

The father of hapkido is Doju Choi Young Sul (1899-1986), who was born in the Chingbuk province near Taegue, in a village named Yong Dong. Choi Young Sul and is buried in Taegu. Choi Young Sul first called the art daedong hapkiyusul. The first public dojang opened on February 12, 1951 named the Daehan yukwonsul hapki dojang by Choi Young Sul and Suh Bok Sup. Yukwonsul  hapkido became hapkido in 1958. In 1963, Choi Young Sul became the chairman of the newly founded Korea Kido Association, an umbrella organization of all Korean martial arts and acknowledged by the Korean government.
