What Will it Cost to Apply?

A non-refundable fee of $51.00 for non-residents must be included with your application.

Who is Eligible?

*Minimum requirements for application for a concealed firearms permit in Utah are:

  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Proof of good character...whereas the applicant;
    • has not been convicted of a felony;
    • has not been convicted of any crime of violence;
    • has not been convicted of any offense involving the use of alcohol;
    • has not been convicted of any offenses involving the unlawful use of narcotics or other controlled substances;
    • has not been convicted of any offenses involving moral turpitude;
    • has not been convicted of any offense involving domestic violence;
    • has not been adjudicated by a court of a state or of the United States as mentally incompetent, unless the adjudication has been withdrawn or reversed.

*A criminal background check is conducted for all applicants.

What Must Accompany the Application?

  • A Photocopy of your Driver License.
  • Photograph. One recent color photograph of passport quality.
  • Fingerprint Card (issued during the class).
  • Non-resident proof of permit. If you reside in a state that recognizes the validity of the Utah CFP or has reciprocity with Utah, you must obtain a CFP or CCW from your home state and submit a copy of it with your application for a Utah permit. Residency will be determined by your state-issued identification. If your state does not recognize the Utah permit this does not apply.

Expungement Eligibility

Expungement eligibility will be based upon your total history, not what has been reported to BCI.  This includes incidents in all states. Some factors which may contribute to a denial are:

  • 30 days - Dismissals
  • 3 years on class C misdemeanors and infractions
  • 4 years - All class B misdemeanors except alcohol related offenses
  • 5 years - Class A Misdemeanor
  • 7 years - Eligible Felonies
  • 10 years - Any alcohol related traffic offense

This time period does not begin until all confinement and probation has been completed and fines are paid. Expungement Section contact number: 801-965-4445.

Considerable Guidelines for Denial, Suspension and Revocation

  • 3 years - Class C misdemeanors and non weapon related infractions
  • 4 years - Class B misdemeanors
  • 5 years - Class A misdemeanors - 5 years
  • 7 years - Juvenile felony conviction (non violent - property crimes)
  • 10 years - Juvenile felony conviction (violent - crimes against person)
  • Lifetime - Felony conviction or not qualified to purchase and possess firearms pursuant to State and Federal law (unless dismissed, reduced to a misdemeanor or expunged)
  • Lifetime - Domestic violence (unless dismissed, reduced to an infraction or expunged)
  • Lifetime - Protective orders (unless removed, must be a family member or cohabitant, not a neighbor, friend, etc.)
  • Lifetime - Mentally incompetent (adjudicated by a State or Federal court, unless withdrawn or reversed)
  • Revocation - Danger to self or others (threat of or attempt of suicide, with or without an arrest or conviction)
  • Revocation - Past pattern of violent behavior (time frame based on the CFP Board's decision)
  • Lifetime - Convicted of a registerable sex offense, as defined in Subsection 77-27-21.5(1)(n)
